How do you stay grounded?
How do we stay grounded?
How do we take care of ourselves?
How do we nurture us?
How do we hold the space for ourselves?
In times like these (sociopolitical situations and a pandemic), is difficult to find ease in this world.. We are all tired, anxious, confused, angry.. And that’s totally fine, that’s valid … We are in a grief kind of a situation, the lives we used to have are not exactly the same. On top of that, there are so many things happening in today’s society. Police brutality, refugees dying in borders, racism, sexism, social injustice, poverty, environmental and health crisis.. it’s a lot to process. And how do we manage to still go out of our beds, work, socialise, being present and resist at the same time?
Is self care irrelevant to social injustice?
I would say NO.
In many indigenous traditions, balance is all about giving back to the Earth. We are not separate from the soil, the water, the sun, the animals, but also , we are not separate from the society in which we live in.
So… how do we stay grounded in a world that is collapsing?
I will talk about my own experience as a human being and a movement teacher. So.. for me self care is not about one thing or the other. We all have our own ways to reconnect with ourselves. For some of us it may be movement, meditation, reading a book that we like, cook a warm meal or take a long walk outside. For others it may be movies, Netflix, silence, comfort food etc. Maybe it’s both of that. It’s not about a right or wrong way. We are multidimensional beings. And self care is not just a day routine. Is the way we’re coming back home to ourselves Everyday. And it doesn’t even have the title “self-care”. It’s at the same time soft and nurturing and at the same time hard work, process, choices and re-evaluation. How do we live our lives? How do we take care of ourselves and other people? How do we take care of the world? How do we find the courage again and again and again to care? Cause it is huge to actually care…
This is not an article about preaching: do this and not that, as a way of self care and healing.
For me personally, some days are all about baths and movement and silence and cries at my kitchen table.. and other days are more about educating myself on the things that matter to me, it’s about taking responsibility of my own actions, about cultivating boundaries, saying no, taking time, it’s about admitting being wrong and take action.
Is there a formula out there on how to take care of ourselves? Probably not.. but it’s about commitment to our own bodies, minds and spirits. It’s more about listening more deeply to ourselves. Its about letting things hurt.. it’s about accepting our emotions and our process. Is about letting things come to us even if we know that they will maybe hurt us. It’s about touching more and sensing more an being present more and being vulnerable. It’s about being alive. And being alive has a lot to do with hard truths and hard feelings. We are all struggling somehow. Again… It’s all about balance.. Sometimes we need a shoulder to cry on and some other times we are the shoulder.
This world is still affecting me cause I do care.
And some days I can only care for this world if I have the courage to meet and feel and listen to me.
and some other days maybe I have the courage to act and fight back!
